In accordance with the 2020 ASHA Certification Standards (https://www.asha.org/Certification/2020-SLP-Certification-Standards/), all clinical educators must complete a minimum of 2 hours of professional development in the area of clinical supervision/education prior to supervising a graduate clinician.

To support you in achieving that requirement, we are offering these recorded self-study webinars free of charge as a thank you for supporting our JMU graduate clinicians!

The Clinical Supervision: Getting Started course also provides some information specific to working with students at JMU and may be helpful, even if you have already met the ASHA professional development requirement.

Course Title: Clinical Supervision for Speech-Language Pathology: Getting Started at JMU

Description: This one-hour, self-study webinar will present introductory information for supervisors who are new to clinical education and/or new to working with graduate clinicians from James Madison University. Participants will learn how to prepare for a graduate clinician, roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in the supervisory alliance, and the importance of clear communication. The Anderson Model and Continuum of Supervision will also be examined.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. explain the role of clinical educators in the development of future speech-language pathologists.
  2. describe the relationship between key stakeholders in clinical education.
  3. formulate a plan to support the supervisee in developing clinical skills.

Course Title: What Did You Expect? Setting Expectations for a Successful Externship

Description: This one-hour, self-study webinar will focus on providing clinical supervisors with information about fostering effective clinical relationships with supervisees. Participants will examine the importance of establishing and communicating expectations, using feedback to inform expectations, and common pitfalls. Discussion of cultural and generational considerations will also be included.

Participants will be able to:

  1. explain the importance of establishing expectations.
  2. identify common biases and stereotypes as it relates to communication within the supervisory process.
  3. formulate a plan for communicating expectations to supervisees.

Meet the Trainer

Erin S. Clinard, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is an Assistant Professor and the Coordinator of the Online M.S. in SLP program in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at James Madison University (JMU).  She has practiced and supervised graduate clinicians in a variety of settings including not-for-profit clinics, university clinic, and hospitals since 2004.  Erin researches and presents in the areas of clinical education, simulation, and pediatric neurodevelopment.
